Two Finnish programmes can have similar names and lead to very different learning experiences. Before comparing rankings or sending documents, ask a more useful question: what would you actually study, practise and produce during the degree?
For an Indian applicant planning the 2027 intake, choosing between a university and a university of applied sciences (UAS) should begin with that question. Neither label makes a course automatically right for every student.
Understand the two routes
Study in Finland's official institution guide describes universities as research-oriented and UAS institutions as focused on practical learning and working-life connections. Universities offer doctoral education as well as bachelor's and master's study.
The official admissions guidance says UAS master's applicants need at least two years of relevant work experience. Qualifications, language evidence and selection methods must still be checked for the individual programme.
Compare the course, not only the institution name
| Question | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| Does the syllabus match my goal? | Required modules, electives and the level of mathematics, writing or technical knowledge. |
| How will I learn? | Examples of research assignments, practical projects, laboratory work and assessment. |
| What practical experience is available? | Programme-specific placement arrangements and whether the student must find an opportunity. |
| Can I apply with my background? | Accepted qualifications, work-experience rules, language conditions and selection process. |
| Can I afford the full route? | Tuition, living costs, insurance, travel and any conditions attached to funding. |
A research-oriented student might look for modules that build towards a thesis or future doctoral work. A student wanting applied project experience might examine industry briefs and practical assessments. These are starting points for comparison, not promises about a particular institution.
Use a three-programme shortlist
Choose three realistic programmes before expanding your search. For each one, write down its exact degree title, campus, intake, application route and deadline. Then add one sentence explaining why its curriculum fits your goal.
For example, “I want a computing degree” is too broad. “I want to build reliable software, and this programme includes programming, testing and a substantial team project” gives you a reason you can check against the syllabus. If you cannot explain the fit, another attractive campus photograph will not solve the problem.
Our Finland autumn 2027 application-date update explains the January joint-application window and why separate application routes need their own calendar.
Fresh graduates: check master's conditions first
If you are finishing a bachelor's degree, investigate work-experience conditions before spending time on a UAS master's application. Ask the admissions team how experience is counted, what documents it accepts and whether your intended start date meets the requirement.
For any master's route, compare the previous subjects required with your transcript. A similar degree name from India does not establish that every prerequisite has been met. Keep written answers to questions that affect eligibility.
Budget for the offer you actually receive
Build a budget using your likely payable tuition, rather than an advertised maximum scholarship. Record whether an award requires a separate application, whether renewal has conditions and when fees become due. Leave space for expenses that arrive before departure.
Use our 2027 study-abroad application and budget guide to organise the broader plan. An admission offer and permission to enter or stay in a country are separate processes; include time for the applicable immigration steps.
Questions to send admissions
- Does my exact qualification meet the entry requirement for this intake?
- What evidence is accepted for language ability and work experience?
- How are placements organised, and which responsibilities sit with the student?
- Which fees and refund conditions apply to my offer?
Send concise questions after reading the programme page. Include the programme name and your qualification, but avoid sending sensitive identity documents through an unverified channel.
Frequently asked questions
Is a UAS always the better option for employment?
No. Compare curriculum, practical opportunities, your skills and the roles you want. The institution type alone cannot guarantee employment.
Can a fresh graduate apply for every Finnish master's course?
No. Work experience and academic prerequisites vary; UAS master's experience requirements need particular attention.
Do all autumn 2027 programmes use the January joint application?
No. Confirm the application route and deadlines for each shortlisted programme.
