Students considering law often begin with two examination names and a long list of colleges. That can make the administrative side look simpler than it is. Which institutions use which route? Have you applied for the correct programme? What will you compare if more than one option becomes available? Answering these questions early helps you prepare with a purpose.
This guide is for students planning undergraduate law admission in 2027. It separates application organisation from course selection and examination preparation. It does not predict a rank, recommend one institution for every student or suggest that registering for one test automatically completes another institution’s admission process.
Dates to keep separate
The CLAT UG instructions give 31 October 2026 at 11:59 PM for final application submission and payment, with the examination scheduled for 6 December. NLU Delhi’s AILET FAQ gives 10 November for the application deadline and 13 December for the examination. Recheck subsequent official notices before acting.
Start with the course you actually want to study
Read the degree title, duration, curriculum and admission requirements at each shortlisted institution. An undergraduate integrated law programme and a postgraduate law qualification serve different applicants. Do not use a general examination advertisement as proof that you selected the right level or programme in the application.
Think about why legal study interests you. You might enjoy close reading, argument, public policy, commerce or the way rules affect everyday decisions. Explore the academic work involved rather than choosing a course only because you enjoy debating. A thoughtful reason for studying law can guide both your shortlist and your preparation routine.
Make a route map for each institution
List the institution, qualification, relevant examination or application route and the official source for that requirement. CLAT and AILET need separate attention, including separate accounts, forms and instructions where applicable. Do not assume that participation in one process registers your interest in another.
Our CLAT final-week checklist and AILET application review focus on the current deadlines. Use this longer guide to organise the course decision and preparation that sit behind those immediate actions.
| Planning item | CLAT record | AILET record |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Your own submission and payment status. | Your own separate submission and payment status. |
| Official instructions | Current UG instructions and later notices. | Current programme guidance and later notices. |

Check eligibility using the current programme rules
Read the academic qualification, required marks and conditions for students awaiting results. Check any category-specific provision that you intend to use. A statement that students from different streams may apply does not remove the need to satisfy the exact published conditions for your programme.
Write unclear points as questions for the official helpdesk. Include the programme and the relevant qualification when asking, rather than requesting a general assurance of eligibility. Keep a copy of the answer and check the instructions again before final submission. A coaching or counselling opinion cannot override the responsible institution’s rules.
Enter identity and academic details accurately
Compare your name and date of birth with the records specified by the application instructions. Keep marksheets available while entering academic information and follow the published method for any required calculation. Do not rely on a remembered percentage when the original document is readily available.
If records differ, identify the official process for clarification. Do not edit a certificate image to make the details match. Accuracy at the application stage also helps later verification, when the institution may compare the online record with originals. Keep the submitted version so you can explain exactly what you entered.
Treat category claims as evidence-based decisions
If you seek a reservation benefit or another category provision, check the certificate requirements, competent issuing authority and applicable conditions. Different institutions may apply different rules. A document used in a school process may not automatically meet a law admission requirement.
Avoid selecting a category because a social-media post suggests it will improve your chances. The claim must be accurate and supportable. When a certificate is pending, seek official guidance about the permitted action instead of assuming an application field can always be corrected later.
Prepare uploads and review the preview
Use clear source images of the photograph, signature and other requested documents. Create upload copies using the format and size prescribed by each portal. A file suitable for one application may need to be prepared differently for another, so keep separate upload folders.
Read the preview carefully. Check that the photograph is recognisable, the signature is clear and every certificate page is complete. Retain the source scans rather than repeatedly compressing a low-quality version. Upload preparation should make the evidence easier to read, without changing its substance.
Plan preparation around the actual syllabus
Read each examination’s current syllabus and question format. Identify where your preparation overlaps and where it needs a separate approach. A single set of practice materials should not be assumed to cover every requirement merely because both examinations relate to law.
Use diagnostic practice to identify whether the main difficulty is comprehension, reasoning, recall, time management or careless reading. Then assign practice to that issue. Track your own progress over time instead of using another student’s score as the only measure of whether your preparation is working.
Build a reading routine that produces understanding
Choose manageable reading tasks and practise explaining the argument, supporting evidence and implications in your own words. Keep short notes on unfamiliar terms and return to them. The aim is active understanding rather than collecting a large number of headlines that you cannot discuss accurately.
When reviewing a news issue, distinguish an allegation, a court decision, a policy proposal and an enacted rule. Do not treat them as the same event. Use credible materials and check context, especially when a simplified summary appears to offer an easy shortcut through a complex topic.
Use mock analysis to change the next week’s plan
After practice, review why an answer was wrong or left unanswered. Was the instruction misread, the passage misunderstood or the time allocation unrealistic? Group recurring errors and choose a small number to address in the next cycle of practice.
Do not increase test volume while ignoring the same mistakes. A shorter review that changes how you approach a question can be more useful than repeatedly recording a score. Keep preparation sustainable around school or college commitments, and allow time to complete application tasks without disrupting every study session.
Compare colleges using academic and practical evidence
Read the curriculum, assessment pattern, library access and opportunities for supervised practical learning. Ask how internships, mooting, writing or other relevant activities are supported rather than assuming every advertised opportunity is equally accessible to every student.
If you speak to current students, ask specific questions about their experience and verify formal claims with the institution. One successful graduate’s profile is not a guarantee of your outcome. Look for a learning environment that fits your interests, study habits and practical circumstances.
Budget for the whole course and living arrangement
Obtain a current written fee breakdown and note whether each amount is annual, semester-based or a one-time payment. Add accommodation, meals, travel, books and other documented compulsory charges. Compare the same cost period across institutions before deciding one option is more affordable.
Read refund and withdrawal terms before paying. A scholarship possibility should be recorded separately until it is confirmed. Discuss the sustainable family budget before results create a rushed decision, and keep an alternative plan that remains academically and financially workable.
Protect the application account and submitted record
Use contact details you can access throughout the cycle and keep passwords and OTPs private. After paying, confirm the application status and retain the acknowledgement provided by the portal. A bank debit and a completed application can be different things, so check both.
If a technical problem occurs, preserve the relevant evidence and contact the official support route. Do not create another form impulsively or assume that an issue automatically extends the deadline. Follow the current instruction about multiple applications, corrections and incomplete records.
Keep the admission stage visible after the exam
When results are announced, read the next process carefully. Registration, counselling, document verification, preferences and fee payment may involve additional actions. Use the applicable timetable for each route instead of assuming an examination result guarantees an offer.
Keep a simple record of what you have completed and what remains outstanding. A reliable admission plan is a sequence of accurate actions, not a promise of a particular college. Reviewing that sequence calmly helps you make a decision using the evidence available when the next stage begins.
Frequently asked questions
Can I treat CLAT and AILET as one application?
No. Follow the separate programme, application and admission instructions for each route.
Is a good mock score an admission guarantee?
No. Actual examination performance, eligibility and the applicable selection process determine outcomes.
Can I finalise my college choice only from a ranking?
Use rankings as one input alongside verified curriculum, costs, location and academic fit.
