Reviewed: 20 October 2026. Recheck policies before booking and before submitting scores.
The best English test for an application is one the target course accepts in the format you will take. Price, test-centre availability and personal comfort matter after that first check.
For a 2027 shortlist, build a requirement table before booking IELTS, TOEFL or PTE. A test accepted by one university may not satisfy another university's current policy.
A real example of why checking matters
Oxford's current graduate English-language page says it accepts TOEFL iBT tests taken before January 21, 2026. UCL's graduate guidance says it continues to accept TOEFL iBT from that date using revised score requirements and also lists PTE Academic.
These are university-specific policies checked on the review date. They do not establish a universal rule about TOEFL or PTE, and they may change. Reopen the official pages for your actual application cycle before making a booking.
Create a table for every shortlisted course
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Accepted test | Exact test name and version. |
| Delivery format | Whether the institution accepts the test-centre or online version you intend to use. |
| Score requirement | Overall and individual component minimums. |
| Timing | Permitted test dates, result-age rules and evidence deadline. |
| Special conditions | Retakes, combined scores, waivers or course-specific restrictions. |
Save the official link and the date checked. If a central admissions page and a course page appear inconsistent, ask the institution for clarification instead of selecting the more convenient requirement.
Do not compare only overall scores
A result may meet an overall threshold while falling short in one component. Read reading, writing, listening and speaking conditions separately. Do not invent score conversions between tests; use the institution's published requirements.
Check how scores must be sent or verified. Uploading an informal screenshot may not complete an evidence requirement when an official reporting process is prescribed.
Choose a test after assessing your starting level
Try official sample tasks for the accepted options. Consider the task format, typing or writing demands, speaking arrangements and your practice needs. A friend's experience of an “easy” test cannot predict your result.
Leave time for preparation, results and a possible second attempt. The application deadline and the deadline for meeting an offer condition may be different; record both rather than assuming every institution allows later scores.
Check waivers and immigration separately
If you studied in English, ask whether your specific qualification can support a waiver and what evidence is needed. An English-medium certificate does not automatically establish a waiver everywhere.
University admission and immigration requirements are separate checks. Confirm any language evidence required for your route using the relevant official guidance; do not assume an academic acceptance rule settles every visa question.
Put the requirement into your application plan
Our 2027 application and budget guide helps place the booking in a wider calendar. If an offer includes a language condition, use the conditional-offer checklist before accepting or paying. The SOP planning guide covers a different part of the same application file.
Use an acceptance-first shortlist
Suppose you are considering three hypothetical programmes. Two accept the same test version, while the third imposes a test-date restriction or does not list that option. Booking immediately may create a second examination cost later.
First identify the overlap in accepted tests. Then compare preparation needs, available dates, result reporting and total cost. If no single option covers the shortlist, decide whether the outlying programme justifies another test or whether your shortlist should change.
Questions to send an admissions office
When the page is unclear, ask a specific question containing the course name, intake, intended test version and test date. For example: “For this programme's 2027 intake, will a test-centre result from this named examination and date meet the accepted-format requirement, subject to achieving the required scores?”
Do not send a broad message asking whether “English is compulsory” when the real issue is a particular version or score-reporting rule. Save the reply alongside the official requirement table.
Understand the deadline sequence
| Stage | Planning question |
|---|---|
| Before application | Must scores be included now, or may evidence follow? |
| Offer stage | What exact language condition remains outstanding? |
| Before enrolment | When and how must accepted evidence reach the institution? |
| Immigration preparation | Does the applicable route impose a separate evidence requirement? |
There is no universal number of weeks to leave between these stages. Build a calendar using the institution's deadlines and the test provider's actual booking, reporting and retake rules.
Choose practice that matches your diagnostic needs
Begin with official sample materials for an accepted test. Review both your answers and your process: did you misunderstand instructions, run out of time, struggle to organise a response or miss a recurring language issue?
Set practice goals around those weaknesses. Repeating only tasks you already handle well can create a misleading sense of readiness. Seek feedback on speaking or writing where you cannot reliably evaluate your own work.
Do not treat a practice score as an official result or assume a coaching centre can guarantee a particular band or score. The purpose of a diagnostic is to guide preparation.
Budget for the complete process
Check current charges directly with the provider for the location and test version you intend to book. Consider travel, rescheduling, a possible retake and any score-reporting costs. This guide deliberately avoids quoting a fee that may differ by location or change before booking.
Read cancellation and identification requirements before payment. A suitable test can still become an unusable booking if the name, document or format does not meet the provider's rules.
Keep a record of the evidence submitted
Store the result, reporting confirmation and university acknowledgement securely. Record whether the requirement is marked as met in the application system or whether further action is requested.
If the institution changes its policy while you are preparing, ask how the change applies to your course and application. Do not assume that an older screenshot automatically overrides a current condition.
Can an agent promise a language waiver?
The institution decides whether a waiver applies. Request the official rule and any written confirmation relevant to your candidature.
What if my overall score is high but one component is low?
Compare every component against the course requirement and ask about the permitted next steps. Do not assume another high component compensates automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Is one test accepted by all universities?
No. Check the institution, course, test version and current cycle.
Can I assume a test score remains valid for every 2027 start?
No. Apply the institution's result-age rule to your actual test and enrolment dates.
Should I book before choosing any courses?
Build at least a realistic shortlist first, so your booking serves the requirements you are likely to need.
