Article brief

Thousands of students search for scholarships only after receiving a college admission offer or facing difficulty with tuition expenses. However, scholarships in India are not limited to students with exceptionally high marks or one particular income group.

The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is open for the 2026–27 academic year, bringing together multiple Central Government scholarship schemes covering higher education, technical courses, agriculture, students with disabilities, specific social categories and other eligibility groups.

Some schemes are merit-based, while others are welfare-based. From 2026–27, NSP also allows eligible students to apply for one merit-based scholarship and one or more welfare-based scholarship schemes, subject to the eligibility criteria of each scheme.

The result is a much wider scholarship landscape than many students realise.
